This is important for keeping a poodle.

The Poodle is well suited for keeping as a family dog. This is not the least due to its lovable, clever character. However, its coat is relatively high-maintenance. What else you need to consider, you can learn here.

Poodles are a friendly, adaptable dog breed and very fond of children. Therefore, the attitude of curly heads is usually relatively problem-free. They are also brilliant – they grasp commands quickly, and their upbringing is fairly straightforward.

The attitude of the fuzzy heads: Family connection is important

The Poodle is very keen that his owners have time for him and integrate him everywhere. He does not like to be left alone and is happy to be with “his people.” Bred initially as dogs for water hunting, they are susceptible and quickly sense their owners’ moods.

Keeping Poodles busy in a manner appropriate to their species: games and dog sports

Poodles need enough exercise every day – the prominent representatives of this dog breed a little more, the small Toypoodles a little less. However, he doesn’t have to run kilometer-long distances for hours. Instead, he is happy about games, opportunities to sniff and discover, and about the one or other bath in the water. So that your curly-haired intelligent dog does not feel mentally under-challenged, you should play intelligence games with him. With nose work, for example, you can sharpen his sense of smell. But trick dogging – i.e., teaching various tricks – is fun for Poodles.

Furthermore, Poodles enjoy agility and are suitable for obedience training and dog dancing. Thanks to their intelligence, their “will to please,” and their eagerness to work, the fuzzy dogs can also be trained well as rescue dogs or assistance dogs.

Poodles have a high life expectancy.

In general, it should be noted that the breed lives relatively long. An unusually high age of 16 to 18 years for pedigree animals is not uncommon, especially in the smaller species. So before you buy a poodle, you should consider that you will have to take care of him for almost two decades.

Poodle: coat care is important

The care of the coat of the dogs is relatively costly. The Poodle is not subject to a coat change, losing almost no hair. However, the consequence of this is that the hair grows endlessly – and eventually matted. Therefore, you should regularly shear your dog or trim his coat. Every six to eight weeks would be ideal, and the skin should be trimmed at least every three months. It’s best to have the groomer show you how to properly tame the coat, so you don’t accidentally cut off too much.

Allergy sufferers are often well advised with a representative of this breed, as the lack of hair loss does not cause any symptoms in many sufferers. Before you acquire a Poodle, however, you should test this. Apart from clipping or trimming the coat, the four-legged friend should be brushed every day so that the skin remains friendly and healthy, and shiny.
