High meat content in dog food: that’s why it’s important

When it comes to dog food, it is often said that grain is bad for your four-legged friend, while a high meat content is very important – but unfortunately it is not quite that simple. Here, too, it is worth taking a very close look.

Whether for humans or animals, the right nutrition is essential for health and well-being. Blindly reaching into the shelves when buying dog food is therefore not a good solution. But even a high price or the promise of “high meat content” on the package is no guarantee of quality.

A lot of meat does not necessarily mean good meat

A high meat content in dog food is very important, because such a composition comes closest to the original diet of your animal friend – after all, he is a descendant of the wolf and has a carnivore’s dentition and a digestive system that can utilize mainly proteins. However, it’s not just about the quantity, but also the quality of the processed meat.

Low quality proteins or even offal mixed with flavor enhancers or sugar will do your dog anything but good. The amounts of nutrients, proteins and proteins that the animals need are only contained in high-quality muscle meat. This may then be mixed with a certain amount of fruits and vegetables or even grains. Whether in wet or dry food, it does not matter in principle, and depends on the preferences and needs of your dog.

Less is more, sometimes also with the dog food

By the way, good dog food is not a question of price. Just remember: if you give your favorite high-quality dog food, he sometimes has to eat much less of it to absorb enough nutrients and proteins than with low-quality food. Of course, this also applies if you prepare the treats yourself. What exactly your four-legged friend needs depends on his breed and age, and how active he is.

Companion and companion dogs such as the Maltese, Pug or Poodle, for example, are usually friendly, peaceful and people-oriented. Herding dogs, working dogs and working dogs such as the German Shepherd, the Bernese Mountain Dog or Australian Shepherd also enjoy working with people and are obedient and loyal if well trained. St. Bernards, Leonbergers and Newfoundlands are also stoically calm. Some hunting dog breeds, such as the friendly Beagle, the Labrador or Golden Retriever with their pronounced "will to please", are also good therapy dogs with proper socialization. Whether you choose a large, medium or small dog for animal-assisted therapy depends on its area of use. Larger dogs are more suitable for working with children and adolescents, while smaller four-legged friends are more suitable for the elderly, as they can sit on your lap or snuggle up in bed.
