Dog adoption: Do good for dogs from the shelter

Many people cannot keep a pet for various reasons. A dog sponsorship could then be an alternative to acquiring your own dog. Animal shelters and animal welfare organizations are usually happy about any support. Read here how a dog adoption works and why it could be an alternative to owning a pet.

Animal shelters are almost always looking for sponsors for certain dogs. Because especially list dogs, old and sometimes sick animals are often difficult to place. These dogs must be accommodated constantly in the shelter and cause accordingly naturally also costs.

Dog adoption: How does it work?
The animal shelters keep a list of dogs that are available for adoption. A person who agrees to adopt a dog chooses a four-legged friend from the shelter list and supports him or her. The support includes partial or complete payment of the costs that the animal to be taken care of causes to the organization. Costs are incurred due to the following factors:

● Food
● Housing
● Grooming
● Vaccinations
● Castration
● Medication
● Surgery
● Special care.

Not all of these measures are always necessary. But foster dogs are often care animals who are chronically ill, need difficult and costly surgery, or have severe behavioral problems that require special care at the shelter. They then need to be rehomed before they can go to a new family. As a dog adopter, you can sometimes visit your foster, take them for walks, bring them treats, and more. Ask the shelter staff about this.

Who offers dog adoption and what does it cost?

Dog adoptions are mostly offered by animal shelters directly. But also other associations or animal welfare organizations take care of the placement of animals or sponsorships. Get in contact with them and then choose an animal that you have taken to your heart and would like to support during a visit.

Normally you can decide for yourself with what amount you would like to support your godchild monthly. The organizations and animal shelters do not prescribe a fixed amount, but are happy about every euro you invest.

Dog sponsorship or volunteering: what suits you?

The regulations can vary from shelter to shelter. It’s best to just stop by your local shelter and ask specifically about adopting dogs. Tell them a little about yourself, how much time you have, what kind of help you would like to provide, what your circumstances are. With a dog sponsorship it can be that you support the animal essentially with monetary donations – for example if it is very shy and reacts fearfully to strangers.

If this is not enough for you and you would also like to have contact with your godfather, a volunteer position at the animal shelter may be more suitable for you. For example, you can walk shelter dogs, play with them and help with socialization. The animals you take care of in this way will get a chance to get used to people and have nice experiences with them. They become easier to place as a result.

Tip: Animal shelters are also often looking for foster homes for their problem furry pets. Provided you have enough time and space available, this may still be an option for you. Check with shelter staff about this as well.
