German quail dog: proper attitude and education

Once bred by hunters, a German Wachtelhund is a true all-rounder among hunting dogs. He can browse, retrieve, and even perform the tasks of a pointing dog. This versatility makes him highly sought after among sport and professional hunters. In addition, he has an absolutely loving nature.

This German dog breed is passionate about hunting and absolutely docile in the comfort of his own home. The quail is not only a docile and faithful companion, but also intelligent. He is friendly to people and other conspecifics alike. However, even though the German Quail Dog has quite an affectionate nature, it is not suitable as a pure family dog. Because these advantageous character traits are only displayed by a contented animal – and that is the German Quail only at the side of a hunter.

Important for the German Quail: Proper husbandry

The German Quail Dog is a hunting dog, which is handed over by serious breeders only to the hunting community. His fine nose, his joy of retrieving and his endurance distinguish him. This companion is only balanced and content when he is given challenges in this area – after all, he is an absolute bundle of energy with a very high urge to move. Here, several kilometers of long walks and suitable training are on the daily schedule. He therefore costs his owner a lot of time and energy.

A not species-appropriate attitude leads quickly to imbalance and problematic behavior is then pre-programmed. For example, the quail will refuse obedience – or worse – go on the rampage. In the worst case, this can lead to your dog poaching if it doesn’t feel exercised. In the hunting household, a German quail dog gets his money’s worth, namely when he can give free rein to his rummaging instincts in the hunting ground.

The quail needs education and training

After the animal has been successfully imprinted on its master right at the beginning, it should receive hunting dog training. Dog owners of this breed will quickly notice how extremely adaptable and adaptable their four-legged friend is. Even if kindness is in the blood of the Wachtelhund: Any disposition, no matter how lovable, can evaporate due to incorrect dog training. Therefore, the right education should be as much in the foreground as the species-appropriate attitude.

Especially obedience is important, so that the quadruped brings the prey to his master at the command “Apport” and does not much prefer to play with it. A dog handler of this breed should therefore begin as early as possible with the track and welding work – and thus lay the foundation for a good hunter.

German Wachtelhund wants to rummage and hunt

Mainly, the German Wachtelhund is used as a rummaging dog in the forest. However, he is also suitable for water hunting and also makes a good figure in the field. If necessary, it can track for several hours; that is, a German Wachtelhund barks in a special way while following the scent of a track. Although he is not a pointing dog, he also does this task with flying colors – all these skills are deeply rooted in him.

Don’t panic if your four-legged friend is going on a long excursion: as a rule, a quail dog does not follow at heel. When rummaging, he is sometimes several hours away from his master. If the hunting dog has been successfully imprinted on its owner beforehand, it will reliably return. Then it’s just a matter of being patient and waiting – the hunting dog does its job.
