Buying Chihuahua: Tips before buying

You should buy a Chihuahua not only because it is small and cute. Despite its “handbag size”, the Chihuahua is a real dog with appropriate needs. These are the things you should pay attention to before buying.

When you buy a Chihuahua, you will get a dog that, despite its small size, is brave, attentive and in need of attention. The smallest dog breed in the world is not a fashion accessory, but a serious pet. If you buy a Chihuahua, be prepared for the little one to need just as much care and time as a big dog.

The Chihuahua: not a dog for the handbag

The Chihuahua is not a fashionista, but a self-confident and robust little dog. He wants to be the center of attention and needs a lot of exercise. Therefore, it is strongly discouraged to keep the dog only in an apartment with a litter box.

Chihuahua attitude: Lively dog with urge to move

If you would like to buy a Chihuahua, you should not only find a good dog breeder, but also plan enough time into your daily routine. Just like a big dog, the Mexican pipsqueak needs two to three hours of exercise a day. The affectionate Chihuahua should not be left alone for more than four to five hours. So if you are working and do not have enough time for this active little fellow, you should give up this breed – and any dog at all. Many hours of solitude would only make the temperament bundle sad and possibly have negative consequences for its health and upbringing.

Before purchasing, you should also consider that the little Chihuahua can live for thirteen years or more. So when you buy it, you are taking on a responsibility of many years.

Buying Chihuahua: Costs and tips for choosing

Especially with the Chihuahua, dog health is often not at its best. A good dog breeder will advise you in detail and point out any health problems with the Chihuahua. In addition, a reputable breeder will not give away their puppies before they are eight weeks old and will make sure that a vaccination record is always included with the papers. Also, pay attention to the parents of your favorite puppy: are they healthy and not overbred, i.e. too small?

As a pedigree dog, a Chihuahua costs between 600 and 1,000 euros. Offers under 300 euros are actually always unserious. A full-grown Chihuahua should weigh between two and three kilos. As cute as so-called “teacup Chihuahuas” are, a weight of less than two kilos is considered questionable.
