Materials for dog baskets: what are the best?
The dog basket is the ideal retreat for your darling, sleeping, relaxing, and planning the subsequent forays. But before you buy a cozy dog basket, you should first consider what material it should be made of. After all, this is crucial for its durability and comfort. Here are some tips on the right basket.
A dog basket has to meet some requirements in terms of material: It must be durable and able to withstand the claws of your dog. At the same time, however, it also offers a lot of coziness. When you buy a dog basket, it must always be pleasantly warm in the basket, but the danger of overheating must be excluded.
Dog basket: wood and rattan have many advantages
Many dog owners prefer a basket made of woven wood, such as rattan or willow, about the external shape and the related materials. These materials are beautiful to look at and offer more flexibility compared to a plastic mold, as the woven wood quickly follows and yields to your dog’s movements. A stiff plastic mold is less expensive and disadvantageous in air circulation because of the impenetrable walls.
Prevent slipping: Cushion and basket must stick to the floor
Dogs are always on the move, jumping in and out of their dog basket. That’s why both cushions and the basket itself must be non-slip. Otherwise, the pelt-nose will start to lurch every time. To protect joints and bones, you should ensure that nothing slides back and forth and that the basket adheres well to the parquet, carpet, or tiles. Tip: For this purpose, the basket must not be too light.
Tips for the correct dog cushion
The material of the dog cushion inside the basket is crucial for the well-being of your dog. Materials such as leather and imitation leather are well suited, as they are robust and tear-resistant, as well as scratch- and bite-resistant, if they are of high quality. In addition, (artificial) leather makes visually quite a bit – but is somewhat more demanding in terms of care.
While people like to snuggle into warm and soft seat cushions made of plush or polyester, these materials are only conditionally suitable for the dog basket. Claws can easily get caught in the long threads of some fabrics. You also need to wash the covers very frequently and thoroughly to keep them hygienic. If you feel that your animal friend needs even more warmth, then better give him an additional washable blanket.
Filling materials: Latex is especially suitable
Filling materials made of nylon or latex have also proven their worth. These are also very resistant and durable: Dirt or urine cannot harm them. One advantage of latex is its temperature-balancing properties. In winter, it keeps you warm; it cools you down in summer. In addition, latex is suitable for allergy sufferers, as the material does not provide a habitat for dust mites. Materials such as polyester fleece or foam are less ideal for a dog basket because they have little or rapidly decreasing point elastic properties and absorb moisture.
