Find a dog breeder: There are several options

You can find a reputable dog breeder not only through a newspaper ad or the phone book. There are many ways to make the right choice. The right tips, common sense and good observation will help you make the right choice. What else you should pay attention to, reveal the following tips.

You have already chosen a dog breed that appeals to you and are now looking for a suitable dog breeder? Take your time to find a reputable breeder who puts the well-being of his four-legged friends above everything else. Also, listen to your intuition: if something seems strange to you or you don’t have a good feeling, you’d better look further.

Find a dog breeder: Beware of black sheep

If you do not want to get a dog from the shelter, you should always buy your new housemate from a dog breeder. But unfortunately, there are also black sheep among breeders, the so-called multipliers, who endanger the health of the parent animals and the dog babies themselves by “producing” as many puppies as possible. The animals are often sick or have hidden hereditary diseases that break out later and cause problems. They are also not reasonably socialized and have behavioral problems, are fearful, aggressive or unpredictable.

In addition to tips and a good knowledge of human nature, it is above all a good power of observation that helps to avoid making a mistake. If, for example, you are asked into the living room of the breeder and the puppies are presented to you one after the other, this is a reason for distrust. Possibly the actual housing of the dogs is inadequate. The breeder should also love his animals and not just see them as a source of money.

Therefore, pay attention not only to the external circumstances, but also to whether there is a loving bond between the breeder and his dogs. Never buy a dog from a car! For more tips on finding a reputable dog breeder, watch the video:

Rethinking the newspaper ad option

You will find many different offers in the daily newspapers and on the Internet. Not all of them have to be fundamentally unserious. Nevertheless, you should exercise special caution with these advertisements. As a rule, respectable breeders, especially through their association, have so many interested parties that they do not need an advertisement.

In any case, distrust is the order of the day, and appropriate preparation is all the more important. If an advertisement seems serious to you, take up calmly contact and agree upon a date of visit. There you can make yourselves then a picture. However, do not buy dogs from unscrupulous breeders just because you feel sorry for the puppies. Otherwise you unintentionally support their cruel practices.

Find a dog breeder directly at the breeding association

If you look on the site of the “Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen” (VDH), you can search there for breeders for the dog breed of your choice. In order to be accepted into the association, breeders must meet strict requirements and pay fees, so you can be relatively sure to find reputable representatives of the guild there.

You can then ask these breeders all your questions about the breed and check again whether it really suits you and your circumstances. This is because good breeders are also very concerned, so they will question you intensively. This is not harassment, but a good sign that the dog breeder puts the welfare of his animals above profit. Also, without being asked, he will show you the health certificate of the parents and the puppies and insist on a contract of sale.

Do not rush when buying the puppy

If you have found the breeder of your choice, you should still not rush. Even if you are already enthusiastic about a puppy and its characteristics during the first conversation on the phone, do not decide to buy immediately. A reputable breeder would not think of doing business over the phone anyway. Get to know the breeder and your future puppy at your leisure before making a final decision.

Companion and companion dogs such as the Maltese, Pug or Poodle, for example, are usually friendly, peaceful and people-oriented. Herding dogs, working dogs and working dogs such as the German Shepherd, the Bernese Mountain Dog or Australian Shepherd also enjoy working with people and are obedient and loyal if well trained. St. Bernards, Leonbergers and Newfoundlands are also stoically calm. Some hunting dog breeds, such as the friendly Beagle, the Labrador or Golden Retriever with their pronounced "will to please", are also good therapy dogs with proper socialization. Whether you choose a large, medium or small dog for animal-assisted therapy depends on its area of use. Larger dogs are more suitable for working with children and adolescents, while smaller four-legged friends are more suitable for the elderly, as they can sit on your lap or snuggle up in bed.
