Neighbor’s dog constantly barks: What you can do.

What to do when the neighbor’s dog keeps barking? Even the biggest dog lover eventually loses patience with persistent noise from the neighbor’s yard. With these tricks, you can reduce the volume to a tolerable level and create a better atmosphere in the neighborhood. But if none of this helps, there are also legal tricks.

A neighboring dog barks for hours whenever he is alone or wants to defend his territory at the slightest noise? Occasional barking is simply part of life and is tolerated by most people, but a yapping neighbor’s dog can become a real test of nerves over time. If your neighbor doesn’t relent despite multiple conversations, these tips can help.

Neighbor’s dog barks all the time: Explain the problem in a friendly way.

First of all, you must seek a personal conversation if your neighbor’s dog barks continuously or at night. Your neighbor may not even know about the problem because he is at work all day or spends the night elsewhere. He may also not find the barking annoying. Remain objective and describe the situation without making accusations. Maybe you will find a solution together.

If you are an experienced dog owner, you can give your neighbor valuable tips to help him break the habit of constant barking. For example, by:

Investigating the cause. Only when the owner knows the cause of the barking can he work specifically to train it off.
More occupation with the animal by plays, longer going for a walk or Auspowern with the bicycle driving.
Dog sports deplete the quadruped’s strength so that it sleeps rather than barks.
Shortening the times when the dog is home alone.
Seek professional help from a dog trainer.
Neighbor’s dog barks at me: How to become friends

The neighbor’s dog keeps barking in the yard when he sees you, or else he barks at you in the stairwell? This could be because he doesn’t know you and just wants to defend his territory or master. In this case, get acquainted with the furry nose and make friends. For example, arrange with your neighbor regular short dates when you play with his dog.

This way, he will get used to you and no longer perceive you as a threat. You can also gain his trust with treats, but only by arrangement. Do not do anything without informing the dog owner first. After all, it is his dog that has possible intolerances or allergies.

Dog whistle helps when the neighbor’s dog barks all day long.

Experts advise especially in cases of hardship, in which the master, for example, forbids closer contact with the dog, to train with a dog whistle to get the neighbor’s dog to stop barking. The high-frequency sounds perceive only dog ears. So they are not another disturbing factor for humans. In addition, you do not harm the four-legged friends with it. They only perceive the noise as unpleasant.

With this, you will succeed in conditioning after some time: whistle every time the neighbor dog barks. At first, this might increase the barking, but gradually he will realize that the whistling only occurs when he barks and will stop his behavior. Of course, you will need some patience with this method.

If nothing helps: this is what the law says.
If you have tried all the tips and there is no improvement, you can consider legal action. However, there is no universal legal basis after dogs are banned from barking. The limit from which dog barking becomes unacceptable is always a question of the individual case. Thus dog barking in a multi-family house belongs to the average noise spectrum, and it is said (AG Hamburg, Urt. v. 06.03.2005, 49 C 165/05).

Occasional barking is always reasonable. This applies if the tenant gets in attendance or comes home, and the dog welcomes it. He may also react to sudden noises by barking (AG Hamburg-Wandsbek WuM 1991, 94). The tenant behaves contrary to the contract only if the dog constantly barks over hours or at night. No special regulations apply to guard dogs either (OLG Düsseldorf WM 1990, 400).

If a neighbor is bothered by the barking of a dog, he can demand that the landlord ask the dog owner to give up the animal or reduce the rent. If the disturbance of the neighbors reaches an unacceptable level, the landlord must revoke the permission to keep the animal from the tenant concerned (LG Hamburg WuM 1999, 453). If the dog belongs to a neighbor who is not a tenant, the landlord must take legal action against the dog’s barking if necessary. If he does not do so, he inevitably exposes himself to claims for reduction by his tenant.

Companion and companion dogs such as the Maltese, Pug or Poodle, for example, are usually friendly, peaceful and people-oriented. Herding dogs, working dogs and working dogs such as the German Shepherd, the Bernese Mountain Dog or Australian Shepherd also enjoy working with people and are obedient and loyal if well trained. St. Bernards, Leonbergers and Newfoundlands are also stoically calm. Some hunting dog breeds, such as the friendly Beagle, the Labrador or Golden Retriever with their pronounced "will to please", are also good therapy dogs with proper socialization. Whether you choose a large, medium or small dog for animal-assisted therapy depends on its area of use. Larger dogs are more suitable for working with children and adolescents, while smaller four-legged friends are more suitable for the elderly, as they can sit on your lap or snuggle up in bed.
