Remove dog smell from the car: what to do?

Dog odor in the car can gradually take on hard-to-bear proportions due to the confined space. But it doesn’t have to get that far, as the following tips show. However, if the stink has already spread, you can reduce or eliminate it with a few home remedies and tricks.

Tips to avoid dog smell in the car

Always spread out a cozy and easy-care blanket for your four-legged friend in his place in the car. You should regularly wash the veil in the washing machine – this will already remove a large part of the dog smell from the car!

In addition, you must care for the coat of your favorite species – brushing is usually enough; for short-haired dogs, you can also run a damp cloth over the fur. Long-haired dogs need a visit to the groomer now and then. You only need to bathe them if they have gotten dirty, for example, after rolling around in the dirt, mud, or other foul-smelling substances.

It also makes sense to vacuum your car thoroughly more often, clean the floor mats and other removable elements such as seat covers, and wipe the dashboards with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Then not only the place where your four-legged friend is in the car is affected, but the entire interior. Only then should the dog smell be contained.

Home remedies to remove dog odor from the car

In addition, there are still various home remedies in case you want to neutralize strong dog odor in your car. For example, food soda, also known as baking soda, works wonders against dog odor. Place a small bowl of food soda in your car overnight, and it will absorb unpleasant odors. You can repeat this procedure as many times as you like.

The baking soda can also be spread directly on the car seats to make it work even better. The next day, remove it with a vacuum cleaner. If you do not have baking soda at hand, coffee grounds can be used in the same way. But beware. On light-colored fabrics, the coffee grounds will leave stains. For light-colored covers, just like the baking soda, you should just put the powder in a bowl and then in your car.

How about a spray for dog odor?

Additionally, you can mix yourself with a spray as a home remedy for dog odor in your car. For example, mix equal parts of white wine vinegar and water and put the liquid in a spray bottle. Vodka is also said to eliminate unpleasant odors in such a mixture.

Spread the spray liberally all over your car and let it dry thoroughly. Air your car simply afterward to get rid of the vinegar smell.

Now and then, a thorough treatment of the car interior with a steam cleaner is also an excellent way to get rid of penetrating dog odor.
